Hospitality Pantries: Places of Hope and Promise

Fish Hospitality Pantries
According to the CAC, in Knox County, 47,000 people live at or below the poverty line, 40% of them children. Many thousands of additional people live very near the poverty line and are struggling to provide basic necessities for themselves and their families.

In the heart of Knoxville, Tennessee - a community known for its hospitality, we at FISH Hospitality Pantries welcome people to a place where they are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve as members of the human family, a place where body and spirit are nourished and people are affirmed, a place where people from different ethnic backgrounds, religious traditions, economic circumstances work side-by-side for the communal good, a place where we create true community across all the barriers that separate us.

We seek to create a community where everyone has plenty to eat and the strength to use their talents and gifts, a world where we can fulfill our common destiny.

Three aims and purposes of a Hospitality Pantry are:

Fish Hospitality Pantries
  1. To prevent hunger and assure adequate nutrition. The earth's bounty is meant to be shared with and celebrated by everyone in the community.

  2. To be a hospitable, non-judgmental presence in the community that respects human dignity and privacy. We welcome all who come for food as guests. The hungry themselves determine how often they need food assistance.

  3. To be a place in the community where people from different denominations, races, heritages, and economic circumstances work together to create true community based upon compassion and justice for all people.
People of different backgrounds are transformed by being in relationship with one another. A model of community is being created that allows people to grow, learn, and enjoy the most about one another rather than constantly fearing differences. In relationship we can do more to help overcome the root causes of hunger and malnutrition. Come Volunteer at a Hospitality Pantry. Every person can contribute to the campaign to renew and strengthen our community. We need the insights, gifts, and talents of many people to build true community.
