You Teach Me / I Teach You

Our pantries are run by a diverse group of people representing different religious traditions, ethnicities, and economic circumstances (A third of our volunteers first came for food assistance). Our pantries create a model of community that allows people to overcome differences that tend to separate us. An in that spriti, we are offering programs like the Women's Community School, the Mosaic Initiative, and You Teach Me/I Teach You (A Language and Cultural Exchange).

Our You Teach Me/ I Teach You program continues to increase our volunteers' understanding of Latino cultures. Anglo and African- American volunteers demonstrate more connection to the Latino guests visiting our pantry. More of the Latino immigrants are able to communicate in English, and more volunteers are speaking some Spanish. Their ears have become more attuned and they can understand the Latinos who speak English with strong accents. Immigrants appear to feel more welcome.

There is more friendly interaction and acceptance of the other all around. The culture exchange, the sharing of meals at the end of each session has drawn all participants closer together in a sense of shared humanity. What we discovered in our first year of You Teach Me/I Teach You and which has been reinforced as we moved forward with the class this year is that the language and culture exchange is really a gateway to a deeper connection with the other. In the process of learning about language and culture of another, we open ourselves to understanding more about their attitudes and perceptions, approaches to problem solving, leadership style, as well as the values we share with each other.

Because many participants have already been bringing their children along, this year we have been developing a children's language enrichment curriculum. Kids will learn language through stories, hands-on art activities, games, and songs. These classes will meet concurrently with the adult classes. This year we are offering two 12- week classes and two eight-week Saturday classes to accommodate different schedules.
